In today's news,
"Slavery is not abolished until the black man has the ballot," (551).
Fredrick Douglas delivered this quote in hopes of helping with freedom of blacks. As soon as the civil war concluded, free blacks were reported coming together in conventions, parades, and petition drives to demand the right to vote. Some even on occasion organized their own "freedom ballots," (552).
Here in the South, prior slave owners are taking negro freedom hard. They do not quite seem to get the concept of it. Journalist Sidney Andrews reports, "The whites seem wholly unable to comprehend that freedom for the negro means the same thing as freedom for them. They readily enough admit that the government has made him free, but appear to believe that they have the right to exercise the same old control," (553). The south seems to be having trouble forgiving the war brutalities and destructions.
An interview from a former slave led to this statement, "Only land would enable the poor class to enjoy the sweet boon of freedom," (552). Former slaves' ideas of freedom are directly related to land and ownership. At a black convention in Alabama, this quote was obtained, "The property which they hold, was nearly all earned by the sweat of our brows," (552). Freed slaves feel that the property they were forced to pour their blood and sweat into belonged to them, or at least a portion of the property was.
Reconstruction might seem to be going as planned but is there any rational suggestions that the great people of our nation would like to make? If so, feel free to write a letter to: 2000 Whitley Way, Hiram, GA, 30157. We would love to hear your suggestions and maybe put them in our weekly issue.

We aint nothing but gold diggers.....
Hello to all that may eventually read this letter,
In our attempt to go out west, we have encountered many unplanned circumstances that in effect, can be described as tragedies. We have encountered many unknown diseases that have taken the lives of loved ones young and old. Many have been starved to death, some died of hypothermia from the Rocky Mountains and other dangerous encounters within the natural mountain barrier, and the surprise Indian attacks along the way as well (462). The original idea to spread west was because of the new found term manifest destiny. We can make this our nation united we just have to try! We have witnessed history being made. We have followed the path of the up and coming rail roads as well. Through Ohio, Illinois, and other northern states. The railroads are carrying farm products and taking them back east (483). We have kind of just went all over the place with our travels. To add onto this satisfaction of curiosity, we have heard rumors of gold being struck in California! We will do everything in our power to mine for gold and share our profits with the ones who were always there for us. We have not forgotten where our home is. Once we reach the Sierra Nevada Mountains, we will get to work as hard as we can (471). While we are out there we expect there to be other job opportunities for our women other than being a mother and wife. Of course we only encourage tasteful occupations, we heard of women being hired for their cooking skills and admired and hired for their house keeping skills and managing skills (472). Most of us find that any little bit will help and why put restrictions on perfectly capable people just because they are female? We hope that you support our beliefs and desires in return we will help out back home in any way we can. Remember, this is for all of us, united!
We send our love.

Extra, Extra! Read all about it!
What is all the fuss about?
Why are man and woman not created equal? Mary Wollstonecraft asked the same question when she came out with her pamphlet called, A Vindication of the Rights of Women which was inspired by Thomas Paine's Rights of Man. She thought that the rights of humanity should not be confined to the male line. She merely wanted women to have to opportunity to support themselves and survive without a man if chosen to.
In other news, we have convicted ten people under an act we created called the Sedition Act. These people were convicted for spreading rumors or false, scandalous, and malicious information about our hard working government. We like to refer to this with a nick name called the "reign of witches."
Though we are working hard in many aspects of the colony, we have not seemed to conjure up a cure for slavery. Our first Congress under the new constitution has been receiving petitions calling for emancipation. We have even had Benjamin Franklin signing off on things to help push the issue. Just know we are trying to handle and please all of our very important citizens and please be patient with us.

Letter to the King
My Dear King,
I am happy to say that the land of dreams is out to a great start. Many of the colonies around us seem to have the same outlook as ours. It may seem appropriate to thank you for the hard work you have put into the colony but that would be crediting you to helping our colony when all you have done is hurt it. Due to your sneaky plots to only make yourself happy, you have created a lot of animosity between us. The Stamp Act greatly upset us. Taxing our colony to gain revenue to support a war that we are not technically a part of and do not care to be a part of does not seem too just to us. Also, sending your troops over and stationing them on our land that we have built from the ground up is not fair either. Why should we support these people who have no value to us? They did not help us when we needed help. We understand you are in debt because of all the wars that you have entered this new world in, but why should we have to pay for your power hungry habit? Is war really that answer to everything for you? During the Seven Year's War, we contributed soldiers and economic resources. You repay us with The Wool Act of 1699, Hat Act of 1732, and Iron Act of 1750 forbidding us the manufacturing of these items (178)? Who are you to take the skill away from a more Nobel man than most? What is Liberty without freedom? All we wish to do is live a life of peace and order and you make it impossible to do so. We have no other problems within our colony other than your rule and taxation, so what can you do to help us?
P.S. The Boston Massacre was merely a snowball fight. Word of mouth got a little too embellished. We are tired of your trade regulations.

Response
To Whom it May Concern,
I am a very busy business man and I will try to address your issues in a timely manner. I will pass this onto Parliament who I hope will help you better than I can. We appreciate you all.
Sincerely,
The King.

All things are created________
The Land of Dreams was put into motion due to the absolute monarchy from their previous homeland in England referred to the Place of Nightmares. A group of easy spirited but driven people set out on a ship to cross the ocean in hopes of discovering any land that can be turned into a home. The ones who originally thought of this voyage brought along with them a couple of indentured servants. These people are those that could not contribute financially to the journey but wanted the same opportunity at a new life so they dedicate a couple years of their lives to become whatever is asked of them. The people chosen for this job could not have any criminal history, they were treated more as roommates than servants, they were never physically harmed, and would acquire money at the end of their term. Their term was decided by their personal choice with incentives. Slaves were also brought upon the journey. Slaves were considered anyone with a criminal history. They were given the possibility of a new life in the Land of Dreams or no hope in the Place of Nightmares. They eventually hit landfall and to their surprise, the land was already occupied with natives. The natives welcomed them with food and open arms. They landed on the coast of modern day Georgia. They chose to stick with the name Land of Dreams and stick where they originally landed because of the access to water and the highly farmable land. Their goal in this colony was to keep everyone happy and never dictate like the Place of Nightmares. In the Place of Nightmares, you could only be an Atheist. That is why most people left there. In the Land of Dreams, you could believe in a higher power and practice whatever religion you like. There was no contact kept with the monarch between the lands. Eventually they would journey back to get more eager participants but it was all in secret.
